Let's Say.......

Let's say that someone's six year old insists that her clothes match, even though this someone knows they do not. Let's say the six year old continues her campaign until said someone does not care anymore. This sweet six year old now believes that she can argue anything to become her version of reality. Now, I see no sense in arguing with a six year old over trivial matters. If she wants to wear mismatched clothing, by all means have at it. BUT, do not expect me to tell you it matches.

I have noticed adults around me who have learned similar lessons. Adults who think that selective memory is going to save them from harsh realities. Some think they can out wait whatever it is that they don't want to deal with, thus making it a non-issue. Others believe they can convince those around them that their mismatched socks do indeed match.

This reminds me that in many places, if you do not know the law and you break it, you are still held accountable. Even if you are amazing at rationalizing your actions, most would still hold you accountable for a myriad of transgressions. For instance, we once thought we had re-registered one of our vehicles and found out later when a ticket was given to a family member that it was not. The officer did not care that we were certain we had done our duty. He didn't care it was not my family member's truck. He especially did not care that we never got a renewal notice.

When I started this post I thought my frustration was with people choosing to be oblivious as a defense mechanism, when, as it turns out, my frustration seems to be more with rationalization. Huh..... This is another fabulous reason to blog. It is so much cheaper than therapy.

And that cop totally didnt care that I didnt know I was in a school speed zone, even though I was within 50 feet of leaving it and there were less than ten minutes left in it. Yes, I still think about it...even if it was my fault.

Oh I agree - it is so much cheaper than theraphy. And here we do not even get notices sometimes - our postal system sucks.

LOL! I understand your frustration. This is why so many people won't be in Heaven. We rationalize.

I just wear the mismatched socks and adjust my thinking to tell myself that I planned it that way.

Yah, and I think that is so much more true today than ever because we seem to be living in a world of people all being the victim and never claiming responsibility for things that they do. BUT, as for mismatched clothes -- I still recall Goldie crying to me (when I wanted her just once to wear what I chose), "But I just love it soooo much when they don't match!"

Hah! The timing of this post. I was blissfully driving around today when some kind person pointed out that my car tax was expired (penalty of not paying your tax? They can take your car and CRUSH it--law). I was 14 days expired to be exact and was convinced it wasn't due until the end of July-- had NOT received any notice. Double slam to me, because not only was I driving without a tax, but had failed to notify them of my move--14 months ago! I would've tried to rationalize it if I had been pulled over.
yikes.

I am glad you're back to blogging. Sorry about the bbq. I hope the 1 st one was okay. I worried about her. However, the new van is awesome. How have I lived with out one, and it has only been 4.3 days.

I've learned it's easier to just give in than it is to argue with my husband.

The matching thing seems to be universal! My oldest is still trying to grasp the idea that two shades of any color can indeed clash! Owell... the one that gets me is the people who are convinced that they are not addicted to pain meds as they are slurring their words, and making up stories about how it's not possible the doctor didn't renew their lortab/xanax, when they are popping them the way most people pop candy. And no I a not calling every doctor you have ever seen to see if they will renew it for you!

sounds like a rough week. Yeah ignorance is bliss for awhile... but you know Hard thing to teach a kid, life has to I guess and that's hard to watch. I like what Nancy said...its a bit overdone these days claiming ignorance
